What is Mixed Reality?

Mixed Reality combines the physical and digital worlds, allowing virtual objects to interact seamlessly with the real environment. It’s transforming how we learn, work, and collaborate by making experiences more immersive, practical, and efficient. This technology is no longer experimental—it’s here to stay.

For years, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies have been widely discussed, as they have the potential to change the way we live. However, recently a new concept has begun to gain prominence: Mixed Reality.

Far from being a passing trend, Mixed Reality is establishing itself as one of the most transformative technologies of the present. But why now? What has changed for its impact to be so visible and its development so accelerated? Let’s try to explain it:

The main strength of Mixed Reality is that it breaks the boundary between the real and the virtual. Unlike Virtual Reality, which fully immerses us in a digital environment, or Augmented Reality, which overlays information onto the real world, Mixed Reality allows both spaces to coexist and interact. This means that virtual objects can integrate into the real environment and become part of the context. The result is a much more natural, useful, and collaborative experience. It is no longer about “watching” a simulation, but about working within it—moving, touching, and understanding through action.

The idea of blending physical and digital reality is not new, but until recently, technical limitations were evident: heavy headsets, imprecise sensors, and poorly optimized software. Today, however, the situation is very different. New headsets are lighter, software is more intuitive, and integration with artificial intelligence systems is raising the level of realism and usability. In short: the technology has matured.

In this context, we can say that the importance of Mixed Reality lies not only in its technological impact but also in its practical utility. More and more sectors are finding that Mixed Reality is the best tool for solving concrete problems, such as:

  • In industry, it facilitates technical training, remote maintenance, and process visualization without interrupting production.
  • In healthcare, it helps plan surgical interventions, visualize anatomical structures, and train future professionals.
  • In education, it offers experiential learning experiences that combine theory and practice in the same environment.
