How XR Technologies Improve the Efficiency and Safety of Ship Maintenance Processes

Ships have a long lifecycle and construction, maintenance and repair costs are often high. Proper maintenance management in this sector can become a success story for companies by ensuring the safety, performance and longevity of the vessel over time.
How do we do good maintenance?

Today, more and more companies in the shipbuilding industry are turning to XR technologies – Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality – to improve the maintenance of their vessels. These technologies are used, among other things, to:

  1.            Train technicians and maintenance operators in machine repair and maintenance procedures. Thanks to Virtual Reality, operators can enter virtual scenarios that recreate reality to practice handling tools, get to know each component of the machine in detail, and perform maintenance procedures without having to physically access the vessel.

2. Receive remote assistance. In this case, Augmented Reality allows operators to receive remote instructions from experts while performing maintenance tasks on the vessel. This requires the use of augmented reality glasses or a tablet with AR capabilities. With these devices, the operator can, for example, superimpose a manual on a component of the ship in real time, and solve problems faster and more efficiently.

  1.            Perform more detailed visual inspections of ship components. Virtual reality makes it possible to inspect areas that are difficult to access without the use of an elevator.
  2.            Track the condition of the ship’s assets. XR technologies are also used to present a real-time diagnosis of the condition of assets.  Augmented Reality is used to overlay critical AR data and information on specific elements, allowing technicians to monitor machine performance and schedule a maintenance task when necessary.
What does it mean for a company to perform proper maintenance?

– Production downtime is significantly reduced

– Extend the useful life of equipment

– Increase efficiency

– Reduced maintenance costs

How can XR technologies be implemented in shipbuilding companies?

XR technologies are helping to transform the marine industry by improving the efficiency and safety of shipbuilding and ship maintenance operations. But to achieve all this, it is necessary to have experts who can help companies implement these technologies and take advantage of all their benefits.

ARSOFT, the best ally for implementing XR technologies in companies

ARSOFT is a Spanish company specialized in advanced Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality software, which has developed an innovative solution for the industrial sector: EyeFlow, which allows, among other things, to reduce costs and dependency on XR expert companies that generate the content.

EyeFlow is an authoring platform that makes it easy to create interactive Virtual Reality simulators and Augmented Reality procedures, helping companies to digitize all their training and maintenance processes without incurring high costs.

EyeFlow is currently being used by large international companies and organizations such as the Spanish Navy and Navantia to transform their technical documentation of industrial processes into interactive 3D content, improving both training and operator support.

The future of technical documentation of processes is not paper, PDF or video, the future lies in the use of 3D resources and with EyeFlow companies can take advantage of all the benefits of XR (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality) technologies in a sustainable and scalable way.

ARSOFT, present at Navalia 2024

ARSOFT will have a large stand at this year’s Navalia, the most important naval exhibition in Spain and one of the most important in Europe, which will be held in Vigo from May 21 to 23.
During these three days, ARSOFT will showcase the Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality solutions that it is developing in the naval sector. In addition, ARSOFT will present its XR content creation platform, EyeFlow, with which companies in this sector can easily create virtual simulators and Augmented Reality procedures that allow companies to improve training and maintenance tasks and thus achieve greater efficiency.

We look forward to seeing you at Navalia 2024!
